Memoir Autobiographical Narrative Writing Assignment - 1375 Words
Memoir Autobiographical Narrative Writing Assignment (Essay Sample) Content: Memoir/Autobiographical narrative Student Name: Course/Number: Due Date: Part One: Autobiographical Narrative Ryan! Watch out! Those were the last words I could remember hearing. My head felt heavy when I tried to open my eyes. Nothing made sense at all. I could not feel anything, not even my hands or legs. Slowly but surely, I drifted off into the darkness and at that point, I guess I felt that it was futile to attempt to stay awake, so I just let go and everything went black. When I awoke, I was told that I had been unconscious for three days and I had lost a lot of blood, but luckily for me, I survived it all and I was on my way to recovery. No major organs had been injured, only an artery in my thigh that caused the loss of blood. I lay there on the bed not knowing what to think. Everything was confusing. Memories of what happened came flooding in and it was too overwhelming, such that I passed out again. It was a normal day, you know, the ones where you wake up feeling lazy, drag yourself out of bed, but after a quick shower and a hot breakfast, you feel fine and ready for the events of the day. On that particular day, we did not have any classes, but we had two tests, which we were going to conclude by noon. Given that it was a Friday, this was a sweet deal because we would have the rest of the afternoon to ourselves. A couple of my friends and I had decided that after the tests we would leave the city and go spend the weekend at Chautauqua. Ryan, who was the one who had planned everything, had mentioned that it was a breathtaking small town and it was only a few hours drive, meaning we would go on that Friday and come back Sunday evening. It was a nice plan and since Ryans parents had a house over there, there was no point of renting. So it was decided; Ryan, Aby, Kelly and I were going to Chautauqua for the weekend. I would not say that my friends and I are drug users, but truth be told, we enjoy getting high. Every once in a while, we would hook up, either outdoors or indoors, and get high and then do stupid stuff, such as shooting videos and such. Neither of us had ever tried anything else, so we decided that we would only stick to what we knew and enjoyed. On that Friday, we packed light after concluding the texts and Ryan had mentioned that he knew a couple of dealers in Chautauqua and as such, there was no point risking being stopped on the way and being searched for drugs. At 3 pm, everyone was at the rendezvous point and Ryan came with their Jeep for the journey. It was pretty interesting throughout the journey. There were a lot of things to see and given that I was into art, I could say I enjoyed it the most. At around thirty minutes to seven, we arrived at Chautauqua and as we got settled into the house, Ryan left and said that he was out to score us something for the night. We all took showers, then ordered pizza, since no one felt like cooking any meal. Moments later, Ryan arrived with a stupid grin on his face and we all knew what that meant; the night was about to get lively. When the pizza arrived, we all ate hungrily and then afterwards began the ritual. You see, for us, getting high is a celebration, so we have some sort of ritual where we light candles and take out Big Joe, then get lit. That day was no different, so we got lit, then began the usual chatter and laughter. We were contemplating on what to do next when Ryan said that since Chautauqua was a small time, we could go for a drive around and look for some outdoor place where we could get even higher. We all decided and soon enough, we were cruising in Ryans Jeep, but there was no place that we found fit for our session. We then decided to drive uphill and since it was a Friday night, there was no traffic and soon enough we were where we wanted to be. The sight was surreal. The moon was not full it was more of gibbous and as it happened, there were a lot of stars that filled the sky. I dont know whether it was the feeling of being high, but I felt so elevated. We had found this clearing, sort of a cliff, just a short distance from the track we had used to go uphill. We all sat down and since it was not cold, there was not point of lighting a small fire. Kelly played some music in the car, while Aby set out to roll some joints. After a couple of hits, Ryan stated bluntly that he had more good stuff and wanted to know whether we were interested. He didnt say what the pills were, but after seeing him take one, we all decided to do the same. After all, all for one and one for all was our thing. At first, nothing felt different, then wham! It felt as if someone had injected me with the fluid that race cars use for boost. It was a feeling that neither of us had ever felt before. Aby and Kelly were laughing uncontrollably over nothing while Ryan began his usual stupid moments but this time it was too much. All the while, I watched them like someone watching a film. I felt different and so happy I dont think anyone can explain that feeling. I cant say who decided what and how or when I only saw Ryan get in the Jeep and start screaming that we had to leave. We all thought that it was a joke, but we all got in the car and the music was blaring, all thanks to Kelly who had called shotgun first. Once in the car, Ryan began saying that someone was out there and he had felt it and after a while, we stopped laughing when we saw that he was serious. Thereafter, Ryan tore out of where we had parked the jeep, wheels screeching and tires burning and things got wild. Kelly began shouting at Ryan to stop speeding down the hill and Ryan heard none of it. That was when Ryan lost control and went dead on towards a tree. Kelly seeing this, grabbed the steering wheel and jerked it to the right, which caused the car to miss hitting the tree dead on, but we hit the side and then we began rolling downwards and that was when everything went black. After a couple of weeks, we all recovered and thankfully, no one was fatally injured. We all survived the accident and that was what truly changed me. Before the accident, I lived a carefree life thinking that I was going to be well. I got high on many occasions and lived my life exactly how I wanted. However, after the accident, I began taking my life seriously. It hit me how it was a close encounter with death, and that realization scared me. I met up with Ryan, Aby and Kyle later on and we all talked about what happened. We agreed that we had messed up and we needed to get a hold over our lives. Soon after, we formed an online forum where we shared our s...

Does Technology Affect Our Society - 1315 Words
1. What role does technology play in US society in relation to bias, discrimination, and power? What specific examples of discrimination related to race, ethnicity, gender, and disability can you see in our society that has been enabled or exacerbated by technology? Technology plays multiple roles in US society in relation to bias, discrimination, and power, some of which are: 1) altering our very understanding of the concept of race through the use of media on the Internet 2) fostering an environment in which inequalities, such as oppression and discrimination against several groups like people of color and people with disabilities, occur, and 3) deceiving users to do something they may not have otherwise have done through dark patternsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It was evident through articles of Airbnbââ¬â¢s recent issues that within the online service of Airbnb, Airbnb hosts were making decisions based on applicantââ¬â¢s profile pictures, which lead to the declining of people of color staying at their homes because of their personal, internal discrimination and biases against several races (Edwards, 2016; Fisman et. al., 2016; Todisco, 2015). Other ways, that digital medias of social networks and online websites enacts faces of oppr ession is by the marginalization and isolation of people with disabilities from the rest of the population because of the lack of accessibility these individuals have on utilizing social media platforms and navigating websites due to the normalization of designing technology with an assumption that all people are abled. The lack of thought towards these groups has left those disabled out of the loop, segregated from participating and accessing these platforms and technologies (Skjerve et. al., 2016; Kochhar-Lindgren 2014). The utilization of dark patterns, functioning as deceptive user interfaces, through technologies of online platforms have given more power to companies that operate those websites and networks by deceiving and hijacking userââ¬â¢s mind (Brignull, 2011; Harris 2016). The functions of dark patterns within social networks and websites include interrupting us with messages, utilizing auto-play or newsfeed structures to keep us within the platform, and creating soci al obligations (Harris,Show MoreRelatedTechnology Is Making Our Lives Easier928 Words à |à 4 PagesThere is no doubt that technology is making our lives easier. Statement of Purpose to Major in Exercise Science and...
Coming to Rutgers University I knew that my major interest would be in Exercise Science and Medicine. One of the reasons I wanted to major in Exercise Science was because of my intentions to become a Physical Therapist. The course work of the Exercise Science programs entails a strong understanding of functional human anatomy, kinesiology, and human physiology, which are all relevant coursework for Physical Therapy school. One major benefit of this major is the senior internship that all students have to find in order to graduate with a B.S. Secondly, another major that interests me but is underrepresented is Nutrition. Ever since I started being conscious about my health and what foods are essential, I found nutritional science profoundly interesting. Nutrition encompasses strong background knowledge in biochemical, physiological, and behavioral processes. This major gives students many marketable opportunities in medicine, dietetics, and clinical research. Finally, the third major that I would consider is Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. This major encompasses many principles of the biological systems as well as supplementing knowledge from Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The spectrum of careers and applications of this major include research in biotechnology and genetic engineering. Some of the major skills that students gain from majoring in Exercise Science are exceptional knowledge in human anatomy, and physiology relevant to exercise and wellness.
